You know what really dampens my damper?
Over my entire automotive career I have heard people use the word dampener in place of a shock. Although I do not always correct them, they are wrong. A shock is actually a damper. Damper and dampener have two different meanings.
Damper: To reduce the amplitude of vibration.
Dampener: to make something moist.
Since we are talking about automotive shocks, the correct term is damper. A damper is something that causes damping. Damping is the effect or verb.
If your shock is dampening, you should probably look into replacing them as they are moist or leaking.
