On the M52 (OBD2) intake manifold, BMW uses this inlets air temperature sensor to measure the temperature of the air and send it to the DME for fuel mapping.  If your oring is ripped or damaged, it can cause vacuum leaks giving you a check engine light.  Replace this gasket for cheap.
