Removing and reinstalling the Dual VANOS unit requires the engine's mechanical timing to be properly maintained. The camshafts and crankshaft must be correctly positioned, and the timing chain and sprocket assemblies need to be properly set during reassembly.

Tool Functions

The camshaft locking fixture holds the camshafts in their proper timing position, while the Top Dead Center pin locks the engine at TDC. The alignment and sprocket jigs assist with correctly positioning the Dual VANOS timing components, and the rigid chain tensioner applies the necessary preload to the timing chain during the timing procedure.

A compressed air connection is also included for VANOS service procedures, along with the specialty VANOS turning wrench.

For North American cars, the most common applications are the E46 323/325/328/330, E39 525/528/530, E53 X5 3.0i, E83 X3 2.5i/3.0i, Z3 2.5/2.8/3.0, and early E85 Z4 2.5i/3.0i.
