The blower motor resistor is a common failure part on BMWs.  The actual fan is pretty robust and does not fail often, but if your motor does not work, or only works at one speed, this is most likely your culprit.  

*Note: This resistor only works with manual control cars.  If you have a digital fan control display please see part numbers 64116929540, 64118380580, 64118376174, 64118362931.
