BMW B58 Oil Filter Housing with Cooler
BMW’s B58 engine is known for its strength and reliability across multiple models, but like any design, it has a few weaknesses. One notable issue stems from BMW’s choice to manufacture the oil filter housing out of a plastic composite material. While this helped reduce weight and cost, plastic components often degrade over time, and the B58’s oil filter housing has proven to be a common failure point as these engines age.
Typical failure modes include:

Oil filters breaking apart inside the housing (referenced in SIB 11 01 20)

Cracked housings caused by over tightening the filter cap

Oil leaks around the housing’s perimeter seals

Oil and coolant cross-contamination due to internal deterioration
When these issues occur, the entire oil filter housing assembly must be replaced. The job requires removing the intake manifold/charge cooler assembly, the strut tower reinforcement brace, and several coolant and oil lines.
Additional notes:
For vehicles with automatic transmissions. Since the transmission cooler circuit must be opened, you’ll need to top off the fluid afterward with 8HP-compatible transmission fluid. You’ll also need the correct coolant (G48 blue or HT12 green, depending on your vehicle) and roughly 7 liters of engine oil.

Engine oil drain plug: 25 Nm

Transmission oil cooler to crankcase: 8 Nm

Oil filter cap: 25 Nm

Intake plenum to cylinder head: 5 Nm (initial), 10 Nm (final)

Tension strut to body: 56 Nm + 90°

Bracing plate to front axle support: 56 Nm + 90°
-
Charge air duct to throttle body: 8 Nm
-
Transmission fill plug: 35 Nm
